Aims and scope
Analitica - An Online Journal of Music Studies is a scholarly publication organized and sponsored since 2012 by the Italian Society for Music Theory and Analysis (GATM). It is aimed at a readership in the field of music theory who seek the new ideas that may originate from a variety of approaches, ranging from the analysis of different repertoires to performance studies and artistic research, from music pedagogy to the cognitive and computational sciences. The journal welcomes submissions on any area of music theory and analysis, but we particularly encourage proposals that complement, expand or even challenge the traditional ontologies, epistemologies, and methodologies within these disciplines, and that intersect theoretical and analytical issues with artistic or empirical research perspectives and methods.
Authors are invited to submit original contributions on these topics in Italian or English. We encourage authors to enrich the written text with multimedia materials, taking full advantage of the digital publication medium. In addition to articles intended for publication in PDF format, our editorial team also welcomes interactive contributions in html and is happy to collaborate with authors to implement non-standard publication formats that accommodate the specificities of, for example, artistic research.
The current journal staff consists of academics, researchers, performers, composers, and teachers representing a variety of approaches to music theory. It intends to develop and consolidate relationships not only with individual scholars and musicological fields represented in national and international institutions, but also with participants in the educational and scholarly activities of GATM and other Italian music institutions (such as foundations, research organizations, AFAM institutions, and music high schools).
The action of the Journal is conducted by the Director and Vice-Director, assisted by an Editorial Board and a Scientific Committee composed of professionals each specializing in a particular area of music studies. This is done in order to ensure the scientific quality of contributions, to encourage topic proposals for debates, and to involve new potential Authors. An Editorial Board supports the editorial management of the Journal and its digital and multimedia infrastructure.
Sections
The core of the Journal consists of Articles in text and/or multimedia format. Analitica also includes a section devoted to Short Contributions, a section devoted to Book Reviews, and one dedicated to the publication of Theses in Music Analysis and Theory carried out in Italian Conservatories, AFAM Institutes and Universities.
A part of the Analitica website is dedicated to current events, i.e., information regarding conferences, seminars and master's degrees, and educational research initiatives concerning analysis and music theory.
For the Section Articles and Short Contributions, submissions to the journal are refereed in strictly anonymous form (double-blind peer review). In those cases where the identty of the author is instrumental to the content of the article (e.g., autoethnographies in the context of artistic research), the peer review process will be conducted single-blind, while still ensuring the absence of conflicts of interest. Upon publication, such contributions will be accompanied by an editorial statement. Proposals are initially screened by the Editors before being sent to two External Reviewers who reserve the right to evaluate the text for the purpose of publication and to ask the Author for any changes. The opinion of the two Reviewers is fully communicated in writing to the Authors. The final decision on the publication of articles, given the Reviewers' opinions, is in the hands of the Journal's Director and Vice-Directors, who are supported by the Editorial and Scientific Committees.
For other sections, proposals for contributions are read and evaluated by two members of the journal's editorial bodies, who reserve the right to ask the Author for any changes before publication.

Publishing Ethcis Code
The following Code of Ethics expressly incorporates the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors developed by COPE (Committee on Publication Etichs). Analitica is a peer reviewed journal that adheres to double-blind review for the selection and publication of scientific articles. All parties involved in publication-Author, Editor, Reviewers, Editors, and members of the Scientific Committee-are aware of the required ethical standards and expressly share them.
Duties of the Jornal's Editorial bodies
- Analitica decides to accept or reject an article for publication upon evaluation of its scientific quality and originality.
- The Director of the Journal is responsible for the protocol of evaluation and review of texts, and is supported by the Editorial Board, the Scientific Committee, and the judgment of highly qualified external Reviewers (Peer Reviewers).
- Articles are evaluated through a double-blind peer review procedure. Each article is evaluated by two Reviewers selected on the basis of a criterion of competence and high qualification in the subject; their reasoned opinion is communicated in full in writing to the authors.
- The Journal is committed to anonymous, fair and impartial peer review. In case of conflict between the assessments of the two Reviewers, the Journal may resort to the opinion of a third Reviewer.
- The Journal ensures that texts proposed for publication remain confidential during the evaluation process. Confidentiality of individual, research, or professional information is guaranteed throughout the review process.
- Articles proposed for publication by Editors and members of the Scientific Committee undergo the same double-blind peer evaluation process.
- The Journal keeps the results of the peer review processes of articles in a confidential database.
- The Journal adheres to legal provisions and academic standards regarding defamation, copyright infringement, plagiarism, or academic misconduct and has a duty to act as required by Copyright law in the event of author misconduct or other abuse. Any reports of retractions of individual articles are published in the first useful volume and on the Journal's website in accordance with the guidelines drafted by COPE.
Duties of the Reviewers
- Articles are submitted for review to two Reviewers: their assessment is fully communicated in writing to the Authors.
- The texts are transmitted to the Reviewers in strictly anonymous form; likewise, the Reviewers' evaluation is also transmitted to the Author in strictly anonymous form.
- The Reviewers are asked to evaluate the articles by adhering to the guidelines prepared by the Journal; in particular, the Reviewers are asked to make a circumstantial judgment on the basis of some specific indicators, and to suggest to the Author any corrections aimed at maximizing the potential of the article.
- Reviewers are required to treat any materials submitted to the Journal as confidential and not to use information obtained through manuscript review for personal benefit.
- Reviewers are required to disclose to the Journal any potential conflicts of interest they may detect both before accepting the task and during the course of the review, in accordance with the COPE principles in this regard.
- Reviewers are asked to inform the Journal if they detect violations of intellectual property law, plagiarism and other abuses or misconduct.
Duties of the Authors
- Authors are personally responsible for the content of articles, and must guarantee the authorship and originality of texts submitted to the Journal. Authors must always make their sources explicit, citing them precisely and punctually.
- Texts proposed by Authors to the Journal must not have been published as copyrighted material in other journals; while their manuscript is in review, Authors agree not to submit the text to other journals for publication purposes.
- In accordance with the principles endorsed by COPE, minimum requirements to qualify as (co-)authors of a manuscript are that (1) significant contributions have been made to the scientific content and (2) responsibility for the content of the article in its entirety is accepted. Funding acquisition or limited proof-reading interventions do not constitute grounds for authorship. When submitting a text written by multiple authors, the Lead Author must ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the text, and that they agree on submission for publication.
- Authors are asked to follow the Editorial Standards of the Journal and ensure the accuracy, completeness, and clarity of articles, in accordance with the scientific and editorial standards of the Journal.
- Authors are responsible for seeking permission to reproduce musical examples and any other material protected by copyright laws.
Diritti degli Autori
- Authors retain intellectual property rights on their work and assign to the journal the right of first publication of the work, licensed under a Creative Commons License - Attribution that allows others to share the work indicating intellectual authorship and first publication in this journal.
- Authors may enter into other non-exclusive licensing agreements for distribution of the published version of the work (e.g., depositing it in an institutional repository or publishing it in a monograph), provided they indicate that the first publication was in this journal.
