Abstract

In the contemporary world, multiple analytical disciplines and diverse research approaches are needed to account for the artistic experience. In the musical field, each disciplinary area with its own history and epistemological background - musicology, music analysis, pedagogical action-research, sociology of music - contributes a specific understanding of problems and a characteristic approach to solving them. This is because the artistic experience is a complex phenomenon by its very nature, both dynamic and subjective, as it depends on the perception of multiple sensory qualities interpreted through filters related to contextual factors. In fact, the distinctiveness of the phenomenon of artistic experience changes over time as it is influenced by variations in these multiple contextual factors, first and foremost cultural ones. This has determined that, in the last thirty years, artistic research has developed as a self-standing discipline, although in some communities, such as in Italy, it is still experienced as an ‘emerging’ discipline. Giusy Caruso (PhD in the Arts: Music Performance) “research artist and avant-garde concert pianist,” is the author of the volume La ricerca artistica musicale. Linguaggi e metodi, published by the Libreria Musicale Italiana of Lucca in 2022 in the series I MANUALI. There, she tackles the topic of artistic music research within the scope of her doctoral studies.
