Abstract

The relationship between a poetic text and its musical setting can be examined from many points of view. One can investigate, for example, the rhetorical-musical procedures intended to illustrate the images within the text, as has often been done in analysing the madrigal. Or one might examine the relation between the respective metric and rhythmic structures, in order to see how far the music follows the scansion of the text, or, conversely, the degree of its ‘barbaric’ approach.
