This article wants to describe a personal approach to the composition practice. Some ideas from the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari will be considered, which will serve as a theoretical container for the development of the practical part. Within the context of artistic research, my work offers methods and practices for composers and artists interested in reflecting and working with pre-existing materials. A further concept discussed and often used by many artists is that of irony, which is approached here from a very personal perspective. In this article, I offer reflections on the relationship between composer and artistic research that I was able to mature during my years as a PhD researcher. How does the artist relate to an academic environment that requires a certain approach toward research and its dissemination? If it is true that artists have always conducted research and had relationships with other disciplines, it is important to question how this relationship has changed today. Based on my personal experience, I provide a diagram, a self-reflection tool, I developed and some reflections on how to approach the artistic practice that can help composers and artists think about how they can structure their own creative process within an academic context.
