Abstract:
This exposition of some analytic results on the Hölderlin-Lieder by Josef Matthias Hauer (1883-1959) looks into the relationship between theory and composition by the Viennese musician. Though his early Lieder (Op. 6 and 12) are full of interesting questions, the “Theory of Tropes” in 1919 radically influenced the music by Hauer and posed new analytic questions. There are many Lieder for piano and voice (Op. 21, 23, 32, 40) which cover the period of 1920-1930. I see them as really useful material to investigate the compositional techniques of Hauer and the variety of possibilities in his use of tropes. In this article, some of the Lieder from Op. 21 are used as an example.
